Are Websites supposed to be ADA compliant?

As more and more businesses end up in civil court, many business owners are wondering: Do all websites have to be ADA-compliant? Does my web design need to be ADA-friendly?

What's the meaning?

Right now, it's not clear how ADA law applies to websites. This usually leaves it up to the court where the lawsuit is filed, which is usually a state court, to decide how the law should be interpreted.

What If One Lose a Lawsuit About ADA Web Accessibility?

Since the ADA doesn't say anything about web accessibility, the Department of Justice (DOJ) won't do anything about it at this time. This means that it can't find or punish businesses that don't follow the rules. People and groups can, however, sue businesses in civil court. If the court rules in favor of the plaintiffs (the person or group suing), the business will have to make its WordPress ADA compliance accessible.

When is the ADA Going to talk About Websites?

In 2016, the DOJ thought about directly addressing web accessibility, but no new rules or guidance were ever put out. When the issue came up in 2018, and the DOJ didn't do anything, they pointed to President Trump's Executive Orders about reducing regulations. Clarification from the DOJ is not likely shortly.
